How do I edit my Wall privacy settings?

You can control who is allowed to see specific elements of your Wall from the "Sharing on Facebook" section of your Privacy Settings page. You can choose one of the four simple privacy settings groupings: Everyone, Recommended, Friends of friends or Friends only. For more detailed settings options, click "Customize settings."

To remove a particular Wall story:
  1. Hover your mouse over the right corner of the Wall story
  2. Click the "Remove" button
To turn off Wall stories published by specific applications:
  1. Go to the Application Settings page from the Account drop down menu.
  2. Click the "Edit Settings" link next to the application you would like to edit.
  3. Select the Additional Permissions tab in the box that appears and uncheck the box next to "Publish recent activity to my Wall."
  4. Click the "Okay" button.

How do I hide certain News Feed and Wall story types?

Facebook allows you to block many News Feed and Wall story types, but it does not allow you to block all of them.

To prevent stories about information that you edit on your profile (e.g., your work information or relationship status) from appearing on your Wall by following these steps, first go to the Privacy Settings page from the Account drop-down menu.
  • To change the settings for information that falls under the "Work and Education" or "Likes and Interests" section of your profile, follow the "View settings" link in the "Basic Directory Information" section.
  • To change the settings for information that falls under the "About Me" section on your profile (e.g., Relationship Status or Family), follow the "Customize settings" link in the "Sharing on Facebook" section.

If you want to remove a particular Wall story, simply click the "Remove" button that appears to the right of the story after you move your mouse over it. Removing the Wall story does not prevent a News Feed story from being generated.

Remember, other users can only see Wall stories about these actions if they have permission to see them elsewhere on the site. For example, if you create a secret event that they are not invited to, they will not see a story about it. If someone is viewing your profile and they are not allowed to see your photo albums, they will not see any Wall stories about you adding photos.

Who can see when my friends post or write on my Wall in News Feed?

When a friend writes or posts something on your Wall, that post will only appear as a News Feed story for friends that both of you share in common.

For example, if Greg writes on John's Wall and both are friends with Dave, Dave would see the Wall post story in his News Feed. However, if John is not friends with Greg's sister Kathy, then Kathy will not see the Wall post story in her News Feed.

Is it possible to approve Wall posts before they are added?

Unfortunately, there is currently no way of approving Wall posts before they are posted to your Wall.

Who can see my Wall?

There are three types of content on your Wall, and you can control who can see them by following the instructions below.
  • Posts your friends leave. Posts, comments, and other things your friends leave on your Wall are controlled by a group of settings in the "Sharing on Facebook" section on the Privacy Settings page. To adjust these settings individually, follow the "Customize settings" link and scroll down to the "Things others share" section.
  • Posts you create. Status updates, photos, links and other things you post are controlled by the "Posts by Me" setting in the "Sharing on Facebook" section on the Privacy Settings page. Follow the "Customize settings" link to adjust this setting individually. Keep in mind the "Posts by Me" setting is a just default for things you post. You always have the option to adjust the privacy for individual posts before you share them by clicking the lock icon directly from the Publisher.
  • Recent Activity. These stories are determined by the privacy setting of the content itself. For example, if someone would already be permitted to see a particular photo and comments, then they would also be able to see the Recent Activity story about you making a comment on the photo. While you cannot completely turn off recent activity stories, you can remove a particular story by clicking the "Remove" button that appears to the right of the story after you move your mouse over it.

Can my friends see photos on their Walls that I've restricted them from seeing?

News Feed will not display any actions or content that your friends normally would not be allowed to see. For example, if you are tagged in a photo that some of your friends are not allowed to view, these friends will not see a News Feed story about this action, and users who are unable to view your photos will not be able to see News Feed and Wall stories about your friends commenting on these photos.

Note that if you select the "Friends Only" settings profile in the "Sharing on Facebook" section of your privacy settings, you will have the option to allow friends of people tagged in your photos and other content to view them. For example, this would allow Sally's mother to view a photo of Sally that you posted, even if you aren't friends with Sally's mother.

I restricted a user from seeing my Wall posts, but they can still see my Wall.

Restricting a user from seeing your Wall posts does not restrict them from seeing all the stories on your Wall. While the user will not be able to view Wall posts that you or your friends write directly on your Wall, they might still be able to view stories about your activity on the site, stories about content you have uploaded, or content that your friends uploaded to the site and tagged you in (if they are otherwise not able to due to restricted privacy settings).

To update who can view content that you post:
  1. Choose the "Privacy Settings" option in the Account drop-down menu at the top of any Facebook page.
  2. Select "Customize settings" in the "Sharing on Facebook" section.
  3. Update the "Posts by Me" section to a more restricted privacy setting. For example, if you do not want a certain person to view content, click on the drop-down menu next to this section, select the "Customize" option, and then type the person’s name in the "Hide this from" field.

Whose Walls can I write on?

Facebook only lets you write on your friends' Walls and your own Wall. You can also write on the Wall of any Page you become a fan of.

Where is the Wall-to-Wall link?

We have enhanced this feature to create Friendship Pages. Click "See Friendship" below a Wall post to see Wall-to-Wall posts and also mutual friends, events both people attended and are going to attend, photos both people are tagged in, and things both people "like." To learn more about about Friendship Pages, click here.

Give us feedback about Friendship Pages here.

Who can access the "Wall-to-Wall" link that appears beneath Wall posts from my friends?

The "Wall-to-Wall" link is only available for people who are permitted to see the profiles of both individuals. This link allows you to see the history of Wall posts between two people. While it cannot be removed, you can restrict who can view this link on your profile by editing your Wall privacy.

To do this, take the following steps:
  1. Choose the "Privacy Settings" option in the Account drop-down menu at the top of any Facebook page.
  2. Select "Customize settings" in the "Sharing on Facebook" section.
  3. Change the "Post by Me" and "Wall posts by friends" features to more restrictive settings.

Wall posts were sent from my account, and I didn’t send them.

It is possible that malicious software was downloaded to your computer or that your password was stolen by a phishing website designed to look like Facebook. Please carefully follow the steps provided:
  1. Run anti-virus software: If your computer has been infected with a virus or with malware, you will need to run anti-virus software to remove these harmful programs and keep your information secure.
  2. Reset password: From the Account Setting page, you will need to create a new password. Be sure that you use a complex string of numbers, letters, and punctuation marks that is at least six characters in length. Do not use words found in the dictionary.
  3. Never click suspicious links: It is possible that your friends could have unwillingly sent you spam, viruses, or malware through Facebook if their accounts were infected. Do not click this material and do not run any .exe files on your computer without knowing what they are. Also, be sure to use the most current version of your browser as it will contain important security warnings and protection features.
If you are still unable to access your profile, please send us more information regarding the issue so we can investigate. Please submit your report here.

I'm able to view a story about a non-friend in my News Feed. Is this violating their privacy settings?

News Feed will not display any stories that violate another user's privacy settings. If you can see a story about a non-friend, it is likely because this user has set their privacy for that piece of content to "Everyone."

What can I do on the Wall?

The Wall is the center of your profile for adding new things, like photos, videos, notes and other application content. The Share menu at the top of your Wall allows you to update your status and share content through many different kinds of Wall posts.

You can also add content to your friends’ Walls by using the Share menu box that appears at the top of their profiles.

How do I filter my Wall?

There are three ways you can filter your Wall:
  1. [Your Name] + Friends. This default filter displays your own Wall posts, posts made by your friends, and stories generated by your activity on Facebook.
  2. Just [Your Name]. This filter includes any posts that you have made to your Wall and stories generated by your activity on Facebook.
  3. Just Friends. This filter displays all posts that your friends have made on your Wall.

Why don't I see Share menu options for applications I have authorized?

Not all applications support Wall functionality. Please contact the developer in question to request this feature.

I can see my Wall but my friends cannot see it. My friends say that my Wall is gone or that I have no Wall.

There's a setting to control who sees your Wall on the "Sharing on Facebook" section of the Privacy Settings page. To check your settings for this feature, follow the "Customize settings" link at the bottom of this section. Right now, you probably have the box next to "Allow friends to post on my Wall" unchecked or have the "Wall posts by friends" section set to "Only Me." In order to show your friends your Wall, make sure the "Allow friends to post on my Wall" is checked and adjust the privacy of your "Wall posts by friends" feature to a less restrictive setting.

My friend's account is sending me spam on my Wall, but he/she didn't do it.

It is possible that malicious software was downloaded to your friend's computer or that their login information was phished in an attempt to send spam from their profile. We would like to investigate this issue further, but unfortunately, we cannot release information regarding a user’s account to anyone but the account holder. Please tell your friend to visit the Facebook Help Center and contact us.

How do I know how many Wall posts I have?

Facebook does not display your total Wall post count, as your Wall is now a combination of posts that have been left on your Wall and your recent activity.

What is the box at the top of my Wall for?

This box is called the Publisher. The Publisher allows you to generate your own content on your profile, like updating your status or adding photos to your account. The Publisher also allows you to write and share content like photos and videos on your friends' Walls.

What happens when I create content on my Wall?

The Share menu at the top of your Wall allows you to post content you want to share with your friends. The content will appear on your Wall and in your friends' News Feed.

What applications will appear in the Share menu?

If you are viewing your own Wall, the Share menu options will reflect your authorized applications that support Wall integration. If you are viewing a friends' Wall, the Share menu options will reflect the authorized applications of you and your friend.

How do I delete a Wall post or story?

To delete a post or story from your Wall, follow these steps:
  1. Hover your mouse over the story or post in question.
  2. Click the "Remove" button that appears.
  3. Select "Delete" in the dialogue box.
Note that once you have deleted the content you cannot restore it.

How do I delete my entire Wall?

At this time, you cannot delete all Wall posts with a single click. However, you can control the visibility of posts by others by following these steps:
  1. Choose the "Privacy Settings" option in the Account drop-down menu at the top of any Facebook page.
  2. Select "Customize settings" in the "Sharing on Facebook" section.
  3. Scroll down to the "Wall posts by friends" section. The drop-down menu will allow you to choose who can view the content that is posted to your Wall by your friends. If you want to prevent people from posting to your Wall, uncheck the box next to the "Allow friends to post on my Wall" option.
You can also control which stories appear on your Wall every time you share content. When sharing something, look for the lock icon. Clicking on it will bring up a menu that lets you choose who will be able to see your post.

How do I share a status or other content on Facebook?

Depending on whom you'd like to share with, there are different ways to share content on Facebook:
  • Sharing with a broad audience: Use the share menu that's located at the top of your home page and profile. From there, you can update your status and share photos, videos, links and other application content. Things you share will appear as posts on your profile, and can appear in News Feed. (To control whether or not specific people have the option to view your stories, you can change the privacy settings for each piece of content you post.)
  • Sharing with a small group of friends: Use the Groups feature to share content with a select group of people, like family members, your soccer team or your book club.
  • Sharing with an individual: You can use the share menu at the top of a friend's profile to write or share something on his or her Wall. Friends of your friend will also be able to view your post. If you'd like to share something privately, you can always send someone a private message.

How can I sync my Twitter account to my Facebook profile, so that my Facebook posts automatically post as Tweets/are tweeted?

Link your Facebook and Twitter accounts here. Share status updates, links, photos, notes, and events with your followers on Twitter, directly from Facebook. Choose the kinds of things you want to share both on Twitter and Facebook. If you're a Page admin, share your Page updates on Twitter as well.

How can I link people's names in a post?

You can tag your friends and other things you’re connected to in your Facebook status and other posts. This feature works with the share menu at the top of your home page, your profile and your friends' profiles.
  1. When you want to create a tag, type the "@" symbol in the text field. Or, type the first letter of the name you want to tag in caps.
  2. Directly after the "@" symbol or capital letter, continue typing the name you would like to tag. A drop-down menu will appear with all matching entries. You can tag friends, Pages, groups, events and applications.
  3. Select the name you would like to tag. It will appear as a link in your post. You can tag multiple different names in the same post.
People who can see your post will be able to click through to view the profile, Page, group or event you tag, but only if the existing privacy settings permit this.

Tagging allows you to more actively mention your friends and other things you are connected to on Facebook. It also lets you direct a post at specific people while still keeping the conversation open. Friends you tag will receive a notification and Wall story that you have tagged them, and also when someone else comments on a post they are tagged in.

What can I tag in a post?

You can tag the following things in a post:
  • Your confirmed friends
  • Pages you follow
  • Events you are attending
  • Your groups
  • Applications you’ve used

Learn how to tag in a post.

Who can link to my name in the text of a post? Can I exclude someone from linking my name?

Only your confirmed friends can tag you in their posts. If you have blocked someone or removed them as a friend, they will not be able to tag you. If you have blocked someone, and then a mutual friend tags you in their post, the person you blocked will not be able to view your profile by clicking on your name.

How can I control who can see my status and posts?

You always have the option to adjust the privacy for individual posts before you share them. For example, if you want to share a status update to remind your friends to RSVP to Susan's surprise party, you can exclude Susan from seeing that post. To change the privacy for an individual post, select a setting or "Customize" from the drop-down menu before clicking "Share" to publish the post.

You can control the default setting for posts you share from the Privacy Settings page. Select one of the four global privacy groupings (Everyone, Recommended, Friends of friends or Friends Only) in the "Sharing on Facebook" section. If you'd like to further customize these settings, click "Customize settings" and change the setting for "Posts by Me."

How do I change the default setting for status updates and other posts I share?

You can control the default setting for posts you share from the Privacy Settings page. Select one of the four global privacy groupings (Everyone, Recommended, Friends of friends or Friends Only) in the "Sharing on Facebook" section. If you'd like to further customize these settings, click "Customize settings" and change the setting for "Posts by Me."

What does the "Customize" privacy setting mean?

The "Customize" privacy setting lets you specify who is able and not able to view the content you share. When you choose "Customize," a pop-up box will appear. From the box, you can choose to share with or exclude specific networks, friends, and Friend Lists.

What does the "Everyone" privacy setting mean?

When you share or publish content to "Everyone," anyone on the internet will be able to view it. This includes people who are not your friends on Facebook, and people who are not in your school or work networks. You should use this setting to publish content that you are comfortable making open to anyone.

Remember that if someone can see content you’ve published to "Everyone," this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be able to view all information on your profile. What people can see when they click through to your profile is determined by what your privacy settings allow.

How will people be able to find posts that I publish to "Everyone"?

When you share or publish content to "Everyone," it will visible to anyone on the internet. People may be able to find your content through public links, or through their friends sharing content with them. When you publish content to "Everyone," you should be comfortable with it being open to anyone.

Can I go back and change the privacy setting for content I've already shared?

For any content that you can edit (e.g., photo albums, videos, or notes), you can retroactively change the privacy setting by finding the content you wish to edit and then changing the privacy setting.

For content that can't be edited (e.g., status updates or links), you cannot change the privacy setting after you click "Share." Instead, you can delete the content from your Wall — just hover over it on your Wall and click the "x" button. You can then republish the same content with the correct privacy controls. Keep in mind that removing the post does not prevent a News Feed story from being generated.

Note that retroactive steps you take to change the setting or remove the content won’t prevent any further distribution off of Facebook that may result from the prior privacy setting enabling others to have access to and share the content.

How can I control what my friends see in their News Feeds?

Whether the things you share appear in your friends' News Feeds hinges on two factors:
  1. The setting for each post that you share. To control whether or not specific friends have the option to view your stories, you can change the settings for each piece of content you post.

  2. Your friends’ News Feed preferences. Your friends may request to view more content you share, or to hide content that you share.

What happens when I clear my status?

Your status will not be visible to others until you fill out a new status.

I can't delete the "changed profile picture" story from my wall.

Some people are unable to delete the Recent Activity story about changing their profile picture. If you are experiencing this issue, please submit a report here.

When I try to view older Wall posts, I am told that I don't have any older Wall posts, even though I haven't deleted any.

My friends cannot see or post on my Wall.

This is most likely an issue with your Privacy Settings. Please note that if you have restricted your friends from viewing "Posts by Me" or "Posts by Friends," they will be unable to view or post on your Wall. Additionally, make sure that the "Friends can post on my Wall" option is selected.

If both of these settings are correct and you are still having an issue with your Wall, please submit a report here.

People have disappeared from my Friends List but I did not remove them and they did not remove me.

Friend removals are not caused by a technical error on the site, as it is not possible for a friend to be removed without confirmation from one of the users involved. The issue you are experiencing is caused by one of the following reasons:

  1. This person removed you from their Friend List, either intentionally or accidentally.
  2. This person has deactivated their account, causing them to disappear from all Friend Lists. If they choose to reactivate their account, they will reappear on these lists.

If a large number of friends disappeared from your account in a short period of time, it is possible that the security of your account may have been compromised. Please select a unique and complex password that is different from other passwords that you use on the Internet, and keep this information completely to yourself. You can reset your password by using the "Change Password" field on the Account page.

You should also make sure that all email addresses associated with your account are secure. Remember that anyone who can read your email may be able to also access your Facebook account. Additionally, please make sure that you log out of your Facebook account after each use and "quit" your browser when you’re done using the site. Never check the "Keep me logged in" box when logging in from a public computer or someone else’s mobile device, as this will keep you logged in even after you close your browser window.

Finally, please make sure that when you access the site, you always log in from a legitimate Facebook page with "facebook.com" in the domain part of the URL (web address). For more information about protecting your account, please visit the Facebook Security Page.

I have ignored or accepted a friend request multiple times, but it still appears on my home page and my requests page.

Some people are seeing an issue where friend requests remain even after an action has been taken. If you are experiencing this on the site, please submit a report here.

People are appearing on my Friend List without me sending them a friend request.

Friend connections on Facebook must be confirmed by both users involved. This happens through an initial friend request or invitation to join the site and a confirmation of the request by the recipient. It is not technically possible to become friends with someone without this confirmation.

A friend request can be sent manually or through features like Friend Finder and Classmate/Co-worker Search.

When using these features, please be aware that multiple friend requests and invitations can be sent simultaneously. If a user signs up through these invitations, they will automatically be added to your Friend List.

Why didn't my friend request go through?

Facebook is a place for connecting with friends, family and other people you know personally.

If you’ve been prevented from adding friends on Facebook, it’s likely because many friend requests you’ve sent recently have gone unanswered. This may be because you’ve sent friend requests to strangers, or it may be due to other behavior that Facebook members have reported as unwelcome.

You’ll be allowed to add friends again soon. At that time, please remember to only send friend requests and messages to people who you already know personally. Otherwise, additional limits may be placed on your account.

For more information on your rights and responsibilities as a Facebook member, please click "Terms" at the bottom of any Facebook page.

How can I control who can see my contact information?

First, click the pencil icon in the Friends box on your profile. Then, uncheck the "Show Friend List to everyone" box. Non-friends who come to your profile will then not be able to see this information.

The Friends Box that appears on my profile is incorrectly displaying zero friends.

Some users are seeing their profiles display zero friends. They may also have difficulty viewing their friends’ profiles or seeing their friends in News Feed. If you would like to submit a report, please click here.

I received a warning about adding friends.

Facebook has limits in place to prevent behavior that others may find annoying or abusive. These limits restrict the rate at which you can use certain features on the site. If you received a warning for going too fast when adding friends, you will need to temporarily stop this activity to avoid hitting a block on your account. I'd like to report a deceased user's account that is appearing in my Suggestions.

Please report this information here so that we can memorialize this person’s account. Memorializing the account removes certain more sensitive information like status updates and restricts profile access to confirmed friends only. Please note that in order to protect the privacy of the deceased user, we cannot provide login information for the account to anyone. We do honor requests from close family members to close the account completely.

My Suggestions are prompting me to interact with my friends or help them complete their profiles.

The Suggestions feature has been expanded to help you engage with your confirmed friends on Facebook in addition to finding people or Pages that you are likely to know.

I do not want Suggestions to find people based on contacts I have imported using the Friend Finder.

If you have ever used the Friend Finder feature, Suggestions may show people who have your email address in their address book and/or contacts that you have in your address book. If you would like Facebook to remove these contacts, please follow the instructions found here.

How do I prevent myself from appearing in Suggestions?

The Suggestions feature was built to connect you with people or Pages on Facebook that you are likely to know. If you don't want to appear in this box for everyone on Facebook, you will need to restrict your privacy settings. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Choose the "Privacy Settings" option in the Account drop-down menu at the top of any Facebook page.
  2. Select "View settings" in the "Basic Directory Information" section.
  3. Change the setting for "Send me friend requests" to "Friends of Friends"

How do I block someone from appearing in Suggestions?

You can block someone from appearing in Suggestions by clicking the "X" button at the top right of their entry. This will close the person's entry and prevent them from appearing in this section again.

Please note that the Suggestions section will not appear if you block all of the people Facebook suggests. You can, however, find this section by clicking the Friends drop-down menu and selecting "Find Friends." Once you have more matches, this section will reappear on your homepage.

Where do Suggestions appear?

Suggestions may appear on the home page, in the new user orientation, on the Friends page, and in ad space around the site. To see more Suggestions, click the "See All" link.

What are Suggestions?

Suggestions is a feature that helps you connect with people and Pages you are likely to know, as well as engage with your confirmed friends on Facebook. Facebook calculates Suggestions based on the networks you are a part of, mutual friends, work and education information, contacts imported using the Friend Finder, and many other factors.

Since this feature is automatic, it occasionally identifies people that you do not know or do not want to be friends with. Please keep in mind that Facebook will never send friend requests to the users that show up in this list.

How can I remove someone from my Limited Profile friend list without removing them as a friend?

First, click on the Limited Profile Friend List from your Friends page. Then, open the drop-down menu to the right of the friend you would like to remove and uncheck "Limited Profile." The friend will be removed from your Limited Profile but remain a Facebook friend.

If I remove someone as a friend, will they be notified?

No, but all friend links are reciprocal, so you will be removed as a friend from their Friend List as well.

How do I remove or delete a friend?

If you would like to remove a friend, navigate to the person’s profile and click the "Remove from Friends" link at the bottom of the page. If you select this option, you will be removed from the person's Friends List as well. You will need to repeat the friend confirmation process if you wish to be friends with this person again.

I do not see the Suggestions section on my homepage.

Facebook uses an algorithm to determine which people and Pages show up in the Suggestions section on your home page. If we do not find enough people or Pages that you are likely to know, then this box will not appear in the space. You can still utilize this feature from the "Find Friends" option in the Friends drop-down menu. Just scroll down to the Suggestions section in the middle of the page.

What are mutual friends?

Mutual friends are the people who are Facebook friends with both you and the person whose profile you are viewing. For instance, if you are friends with Chris, and Mark is friends with Chris, then Chris will be shown as a mutual friend when you are viewing Mark's profile.

You will never see mutual friends on your own profile page because you cannot have friends in common with yourself.

Where can I find a list of my friends’ Status Updates?

To view only Status Updates from your friends on your home page, select "Friends" from your left hand navigation dashboard menu. Then, select the "Status Updates" filter from the left side of the page.

Why can’t I see my friends’ status updates from the Friends page?

While status updates have been removed from the Friends page, they have been added in a separate filter on the home page. If you do not see this filter in your left hand menu immediately, just click the "More" link located beneath the menu.

Where are my friend details?

With recent changes to the site, friend details have been converted to Friend Lists. To simplify the conversion process, any extra data you filled out after checking the box may have been lost.

Friend Lists provide organized groupings of your friends on Facebook. You can filter your view of each Friend List’s stream of activity separately on the home page. In addition, you can easily send messages and invites to these groups of people.

How can I view and organize my friends and Pages I am a fan of?

Go to your Friends page to view all of your confirmed friends and Pages. Use the tabs on the left side of the page to filter the friends you are viewing.

To create and customize additional Lists, which can contain both profiles and Pages, please follow these steps:
  1. Click the "Create" link that appears beneath the filters on the left side of your home page or your Friends page. Or, click the "Create New List" button from the "All Friends" tab of the Friends page.
  2. Type the title of your list and hit enter.
  3. Add people or Pages to the list by typing their names into the "Add to List" field or selecting them from the list.
  4. Select "Save List" to store your changes.

Who shows up in the "friends box" on my profile?

Your "friends box" will show the thumbnails of six randomly selected friends until you specify otherwise. To edit these settings, simply navigate to your profile page and then click on the pencil icon in the upper right hand corner of the "Friends" box.

The Edit Box that appears will allow you to specify how many friends are displayed and which friends you always want to show. If you want to ensure that friends from certain networks appear, you can select those networks in the "Include friends from" section. Finally, checking the "Show Networks Section" will display a list of all of the networks your friends are in.

My contact file or address book won't import to Facebook.

Please make sure that the file follows the format below:
  1. First line contains the words "Email Addresses"
  2. The following rows only contain email addresses and no other type of information (name, location, etc.)
If you continue to experience problems, please submit a report here. Please note that Facebook may need a copy of your address book (e.g. comma separated value - .csv file) to troubleshoot the problem. However, we will not send any invitations on your behalf.

I tried to use the Friend Finder, but I was told that I entered the wrong password.

When using the Friend Finder to send friend requests and invite people to Facebook, please make sure to use your email password and not your Facebook password. In addition, please ensure that the password is less than 17 characters and does not contain any strange characters (passwords must be a combination of letters/numbers). If you are still unable to use this feature, please submit a report here.

What is the Facebook Bot?

The Facebook Bot (AIM: facebook) will alert your friends of invitations and friend requests that you send to them when using the AIM Instant Messenger Friend Finder. If you wish to stop the Facebook Bot from contacting you in the future, you can type "stop" or "cancel" into an instant message with the Facebook Bot. You can learn more about what the Facebook Bot can do by typing "help" into an instant message with the Facebook Bot.

How are my friends notified if I send invites using AIM Instant Messenger?

Friends on your AIM Buddy List will be sent instant messages that inform them that you have added them as a friend. If the person already uses Facebook and has their AIM Screen Name listed on their account, they will be sent a friend request. If the person does not use Facebook yet or has not listed their AIM Screen Name, they will be sent an invitation via AIM to join Facebook. If the person is not online at the time the invitation is sent, they will receive it the next time they log in.

How do I add friends from my AIM Buddy List to Facebook?

You can invite friends on your AIM Buddy List by first clicking "Find Friends" from the Friends drop-down at the top of any Facebook page. On the following page is the option to use the AIM Instant Messenger Friend Finder. Once you have selected this option, you will then need to enter your AIM Screen Name and AIM Password into the appropriate fields. You can then select which of your friends you want to send friend requests to or invite to Facebook.

Flickr stories are no longer importing to my Wall.

Some users are finding that Flickr stories are no longer importing to their Walls. No further reports are needed at this time.

I tried to use the Friend Finder, but it says I have an unsupported email.

At this time, the Friend Finder is capable of looking directly at email address books for certain email domains (e.g., @hotmail.com). If the error message, "Unsupported Email Address" appears, then this feature cannot automatically look at the address book of your email address to find your friends.

However, you can still use this feature if your email client (the program you use to read your email) allows you to export your contacts list as a .csv, .vcf, or .txt file. Uploading this file to Facebook will allow us to use it to tell you which of your contacts are on the site. For more detailed instructions on how to do this with specific clients, please see the bottom of the Friend Finder page.

In the future, we hope to expand the feature's capabilities to serve the needs of a wider range of users. In the meantime, please feel free to utilize our other search and invitation tools.

To use these options, select the "Privacy Settings" option from the "Settings" drop-down menu at the top of any Facebook page. You can also review and edit your Friend Lists from the Friends page.

What is a Limited Profile?

The Limited Profile functionality is a type of Friend List. You can limit the privacy settings for any friend list you create. If you had people on your Limited Profile, they have been moved to a new friend list called "Limited Profile," and this friend list has been added to the appropriate places on your privacy settings. For example, if you hid your Wall Posts in your Limited Profile, the new Limited Profile friend list has been placed under the "Except These People" setting for Wall Posts.

Why can I see News Feed stories about someone who has yet to accept my friend request?

When you send a friend request to a person, public stories about them (stories that have the privacy set to "Everyone") may appear in your News Feed. This way you don’t have wait for them to respond to your friend request to see their public updates. Please note that News Feed will never show stories that a non-friend wouldn’t ordinarily be able to see. People who have yet to accept your friend requests will also appear on the Friends page. Here, you can add them to Friend Lists.

If you don’t want to see stories from a person who has yet to accept your friend requests, you can hide them from your News Feed by placing your cursor to the right of a story about them and clicking the "Hide" link that appears. Alternatively, you can remove them as a friend by clicking the "X" next to their name on the Friends page.

Why can someone I haven’t accepted as a friend see News Feed stories about me?

When someone sends you a friend request, public stories about you may appear in their News Feed. If you decline a friend request from this person, public stories about you (stories that have the privacy set to "Everyone") will no longer appear in their News Feed. Please note that News Feed will never show stories that a non-friend wouldn’t ordinarily be able to see. For example, if you posted a video and set the privacy to "Friends," a person who is waiting for you to approve their friend request would not see that in their News Feed. If you had set the video to be visible to Everyone, that person would see it.

You can always change your privacy settings by selecting "Privacy Settings" under the Settings drop-down menu and clicking the appropriate section.

After selecting the Friend List you want to invite, the friends that qualify to be invited will appear in the invitation queue. Please note that a friend may not qualify to be invited if he or she is not a member of the network a group is registered under.

How do I message all members of a Friend List?

To send a message to a Friend List from your Inbox, select the "Compose" button and enter the name of your Friend List into the "To" field. Since the maximum number of recipients is always 20, you will not be able to send a message to any Friend List that contains over 20 people.

How can I use Friend Lists to help control my privacy?

From the Profile Information section of your Privacy Settings page, clicking "Customize" will open a field for "Hide this from these people." Adding a friend or Friend List name here will hide the information in question from these people when they view your profile.

If you add a user to more than one Friend List, and those Friend Lists have conflicting privacy settings, the more restrictive of the privacy settings will always be respected.

If you enter three or more friends as an exception, you’ll have the option to create a new Friend List to group these people. You can create, edit and delete Friend Lists from your Friends page.

What can I do to prevent or address cyberbullying?

We want Facebook to remain an environment where people can connect and share comfortably. Cyberbullying is defined as the use of any new technology to harass or intimidate someone, and there are steps you can take to prevent this kind of behavior if it occurs.
  • Accept Friend Requests Safely

In order to prevent harassment from strangers, be careful to accept friend requests only from people you know in real life. Also, remember to report any messages or profiles that look suspicious. Facebook is based on a real-name culture, and fake profiles are regularly disabled when they're reported to us. Please also keep in mind that only confirmed friends can post to your Wall or contact you via Facebook Chat, so if you're worried that someone will make inappropriate posts or send offensive messages, just ignore that person's friend request.
  • Use the "Block" Feature to Stop Abusive Behavior

A block prevents specific people from viewing your profile. When you block people, any ties you currently have with them will be broken, and these people won't be able to contact you through Facebook. If you receive inappropriate or abusive communication, you can block the person by listing his or her name, or email address in the "Block People" fields at the bottom of the Block List page. You can visit this page at any time by navigating to the "Privacy Settings" option in the Account drop-down menu available from the top of every page.
  • Report Abusive Behavior Directly to Facebook

The most efficient way to report abuse is to do it in the same place it occurs on Facebook. For example, if you receive a harassing message in your Inbox, you can report the message by clicking on the "Report" link next to the sender's name as you are reading the message. If you receive a harassing message from a person who is a Facebook friend of yours, you should remove the person as a friend and report the message. Reporting the message as harassing will automatically add this person to your Block list. You can also use the "Report/Block person" link that appears at the bottom of the abusive user's profile. If you learn that someone is continuing to make abusive comments about you even after you've blocked them, you can ask a friend to report that person on your behalf. Reports are confidential and the user being reported does not know that they have been reported. After a report is submitted, we will investigate the issue and make a determination as to whether or not the content should remain on the site based on our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. A Facebook administrator looks into each report thoroughly before taking action. Please note that our team makes it a priority to respond to reports of harassing messages on the site.
  • Restrict Privacy Settings

  • To restrict the amount of information that potential bullies may have access to, customize your privacy settings so that certain people can't access information like your Wall, photos, or profile. You can also change your privacy settings if you are uncomfortable being found in searches or having your profile viewed publicly. Privacy on Facebook is controlled primarily from the Privacy Settings page. This page is always available by navigating to the "Privacy Settings" option in the Account drop-down menu available from the top of every page. Please note that minors do not have public search listings created for them, so they do not appear in outside search engines until they have turned 18.

  • Respond to Abusers in the Right Way

Cyberbullies often seek a reaction from the people they harass. When they fail to get one, they often give up gradually. Rather than responding to a bully via Inbox, a Wall post, or Facebook Chat, you can use the "Block" or "Report" functions to resolve the issue safely. Remember, only confirmed friends can post to your Wall or send you a message through Chat. If you are receiving posts and Chat messages you don't like, you should consider removing the sender from your friends list. Please note that you should also contact the authorities if you ever feel threatened by something you see on the site.

Facebook is a founding member of the StopCyberbullying Coalition affiliated with stopcyberbullying.org.

How do I remove someone from my Block List?

You can do this by clicking Remove next to their name from the bottom of the Privacy Settings page. Please note that this will not automatically add them to your friends list. Instead, you will need to search for them and send them a friend request if you wish to become friends.

If I block someone, will I still be able to view content that they added previously?

If you block a user, some content that they posted before you blocked them will remain on your profile and on other areas of the site. This content includes:
  • Messages in your Inbox (You will not be able to click to view the blocked user’s profile).
  • Wall posts the user had previously made on your Wall.
  • Stories about the blocked user that are posted on your mutual friends’ Walls (e.g., If the blocked friend tagged one of your mutual friends in a photo).
  • Photos that both the blocked user and one or more mutual friends are tagged in.
  • Groups that the blocked user has created. (You can still request to join these groups. The of the blocked user will appear as a "Creator" and will show up in black, but the user will not show up in the list of officers).
  • Photos previously tagged of you by the blocked user.
  • Messages that the blocked user sends to a thread that you are both a part of.
  • Messages that the blocked user sends to a group of which they are an admin and you are a member.
  • Invitations to an event that is affiliated with a group in which the blocked user is an admin and you are a member.
  • Comments made by the blocked user on a photo that was added by a mutual friend.
  • Photos the blocked user adds to a group you are both in.

Why am I able to see content added by a user that I've blocked on the site?

Blocking a user will prevent any type of direct interaction between you and that user. However, for technical reasons, there are certain instances when an individual you have blocked from your account may be able to view your comments on the site and vice versa, including comments on a mutual friend's photo. Please be assured that your listing will appear in black text, with no profile picture visible or contact links available.

If I share mutual friends with the user I am blocking, will they be able to see my comments to this mutual friend?

Blocking allows you to prevent most interactions with someone on Facebook. People you block won't be able to find you in searches, view your profile, or contact you with pokes, Wall posts, or personal messages. In addition, they will not be able to see your Wall posts, comments on mutual friends’ Walls, or that you are a member of the same group as them.

They will, however, see your comments on content that is posted by a mutual friend. You will see their comments as well.

Will someone know if I've blocked them?

No. Blocking someone is completely confidential, and the person will not be notified that he or she has been blocked.

What if I can't find the person I want to block?

If you are having trouble finding the person you want to block, note that you can also block someone by submitting their email address. Go to the Privacy Settings page and click "Block List." Enter the email address of the person you want to block in the Email field and click "Block."

If the email address you submit is associated with an account, that user will be blocked from viewing your content. If the email address is not associated with an account, then the user will be blocked if they open an account in the future. Unfortunately, for privacy reasons, we are unable to provide information about any accounts that may be associated with a blocked email address.

If you cannot block someone and would like to prevent them from viewing your profile, you can adjust your Privacy Settings accordingly. For more information on editing your Privacy Settings, click here.

How do I block someone?

There are three ways to block someone:
  1. Go to the Privacy Settings page and click "Block List." Enter the name or email address of the person you want to block in the appropriate field and click "Block."
  2. If you cannot find someone using the Person search field, try going to their profile page. You can block them by navigating to the "Report/Block this Person" link at the bottom of their profile page. Once you click this link, check the "Block this person" box and then click "Submit."
  3. Lastly, please note that you can block someone through the "Report" link located next to messages in your Inbox.
People will not be notified when you block them. If you are unable to block someone using any of the methods listed above, it is possible that they have left Facebook or have restricted their privacy settings.

If you cannot block someone and would like to prevent them from viewing your profile, you can adjust your Privacy Settings accordingly. For more information on editing your Privacy Settings, click here.

What is blocking? What happens when I block someone?

A block prevents specific people from viewing your profile. Any ties you currently have with the people you block will be broken (friendship connections, friend details, etc.). Your profile will not be visible to them and you will not appear in their search results or friend lists. Blocking is mutual, so they will also become invisible to you as well.

Keep in mind that blocking someone may not prevent all communications and interactions in third-party applications, and does not extend to elsewhere on the Internet.

Please note that removing a block will not restore a connection. If you block a friend and then remove that person from you Block List, you will need to send them a new friend request.

It says I have pending friend requests, but I don't see any.

First, please make sure that you received this request at an email address that is listed on your account. If the request was sent to a different email address then it will not show in your account. You can send the other person a friend request from your account, or you can ask them to request you as a friend again at the appropriate email address.

I got an email saying I have a pending friend request, but I don't see one.

Please make sure that you received this request at an email address that is listed on your account. If the request was sent to a different email address then it will not show in your account.

In addition, if someone deactivates his or her account, you will not see the friend request on your Home page.

Feel free to send the other person a friend request from your account. Alternatively, you could ask them to request you as a friend again at the appropriate email address.

How do I view the pending friend requests I've made?

Unfortunately, a list of pending friend requests is not available. You can, however, determine the status of your friend request with another user when you find them in search. The "Add as Friend" link will appear if you have no pending friend request with them. If you have a pending request with them, "Friend requested" will appear instead. If the "Remove friend" link appears, you two have confirmed your friendship.

If I ignore a friend request, will they find out?

No. When you ignore someone, their friend request will be removed from your list of friendships to confirm, and they will not be notified.

I accidentally sent out an invitation. Is there anything I can do?

Unfortunately, there is no way to "take back" an invitation once it has been sent.

I sent somebody a friend request but they did not receive it.

Please provide adequate time for the person to take action on the request as they may have missed the notification email or may have not seen it on their Home page yet. If you sent this request using the Friend Finder, please make sure that you sent it to an email address that is listed on this person's account. If the request was sent to a different email address, then it will not appear in their account.

How do I remove contacts I uploaded using Friend Finder?

You can remove contacts you uploaded here.

Is there a way to remove or cancel a friend request?

Yes, from the Friends page, click the "x" located to the right of the person's name.

A large number of my friends have disappeared.

The security of your account may have been compromised.

Can you send me a copy of my password without resetting it?

For security reasons, Facebook does not have the ability to send you a copy of your current password. However, you can reset your password here.

Please note that if you are already logged in, you can change your password from the Account Settings page.

If I already have a user profile, can I create a business account?

Maintaining multiple accounts, regardless of the purpose, is a violation of Facebook’s Terms of Use. If you already have a personal account, then we cannot allow you to create business accounts for any reason. You can manage all the Pages and Socials Ads that you create on your personal account.

Please keep in mind that the fans of any of the Pages you administer will not have visibility or access to your personal account or profile. Any actions that you take as a Page administrator on your Page will show the Page’s name as the actor and not your personal name.

If you wish to manage ads for multiple clients, you will need to do so from one account. We suggest you restrict all ads for each client to separate campaigns. Unfortunately it is not currently possible to designate separate credit cards for each campaign or to have multiple administrators for the same ad account.

I have two accounts. Is it possible to merge them?

Facebook does not allow you to merge accounts. You need to copy your profile content (e.g. photos, notes, etc.) and add it manually to your more active account. Unfortunately, there will be some things you cannot transfer, such as Friends and Wall posts. Once you have moved all information onto a single account, please deactivate your old account from the Settings tab of the Account page. Afterward, you can add email addresses and networks to your new account from the Account page. Please note that maintaining multiple accounts is a violation of Facebook's Terms of Use.

I want to change my login email address.

Please note that any of the email addresses associated with your account can be used as login email addresses. You can add or edit your email addresses from the Settings tab of the Account page. If you are having trouble accessing an existing account on the site, do not create another account, as this is a violation of our Terms of Use and may delay resolution of the issue.

When creating a new password, be sure that it is at least 6 characters in length and that you use a complex string of numbers, letters, and punctuation marks. Ideally, the password you select should be easy for you to remember but hard for someone else to figure out. For added security, your Facebook password should also be different than other passwords that you use on the internet.
